PIPELINE-DITO
Pilot Portuguese coastal operational model for the Digital Twin of the Ocean
ABOUT
Welcome to PIPELINE-DITO, a Copernicus Marine research project to leverage Portuguese ocean modelling services through innovation.
The Pilot PortuguEse coastaL operatioNal modEl for the DIgital Twin of the Ocean project aims to demonstrate the capacities of numerical modelling to support the implementation of EU Policies and Directives and the promotion of the blue economy.
State-of-the art numerical modelling will be employed in three pilot case studies covering three distinct applications and a reanalysis operational application for the entire Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of mainland Portugal.
PIPELINE-DITO also aims to facilitate the integration with the Copernicus Marine Service by adopting similar quality standards and product documentation, distribution, and visualisation procedures. Model encapsulation will allow future migration to other computing facilities and European infrastructures.
All applications will also provide useful information for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Water Framework Directive (WFD), the Maritime Spatial Planning directive (MSP), the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and the EU Green Deal.
CONSORTIUM
The project consortium, leveraging past efforts and expertise, aims to establish a robust, consistent, and reliable numerical modelling framework to support Portuguese administrations in meeting EU policy requirements by establish a national coastal operational modelling programme for Portugal.
Comprised of three institutions with expertise in operational ocean and atmospheric forecasting models, the consortium will be enriched by an Advisory Board that includes authorities responsible for EU directive implementation, Copernicus national representative, operational numerical modellers, and blue economy sectors actors.
